Quick Takes Friday: 42 Questions

For today's edition of Quick Takes Friday, I'm answering a bunch of questions off of Tumblr!

Actually, no one asks me questions on Tumblr, but when I see questions come up on my dashboard, I want to answer most of them... so I will today.

1:Do you sleep with your closet doors open or closed?
Neither: my closet doors are somewhere in the garage. I removed them years ago instead of taking some WD40 to the squeaky parts.

2:Do you take the shampoos and conditioner bottles from hotel?
Yes. Well, either I use them, or we hide Grandma's expensive shampoo and leave out the hotel kind when a certain relative visits. (We have to hide a lot of things when this relative visits).

3:Do you sleep with your sheets tucked in or out?
Out

4:Have you ever stolen a street sign before?
No

5:Do you like to use post-it notes?
Does the Pope wear an epic hat? (the answer is yes)

6:Do you cut out coupons but then never use them?
Sometimes. Once every year or two, I cut out coupons. Mostly, I'm the one holding onto all the store discount stuff they send in the mail (and Grandma doesn't let me forget to use them).

7:Would you rather be attacked by a big bear or a swarm of a bees?
Neither, but I'd have more training with the bees than bears. So long as it's not red ants.

8:Do you have freckles?
Um...I think so. Not like my cousin Breanna. She got the freckles and epic gingerness. (Yes, I was jealous)

9:Do you always smile for pictures?
I prefer to be taking the picture, so it doesn't matter.

10:Do you ever dance even if theres no music playing?
Yes. This is how I've kept from freezing at work this week.

11:Do you chew your pens and pencils?
I don't chew on them, but I do hold them in my mouth at times. Not so much since working with a particular student.

12:What is your Song of the week?
"This Year" by The Mountain Goats

13:Do you still watch cartoons?
Somewhat. I do watch old episodes of Hey, Arnold on occasion.

14:Whats your least favorite movie?
The Notebook (also, every Twilight movie and most movies that appear on Lifetime)

15:What do you dip a chicken nugget in?
Honey mustard

16:Were you ever a boy/girl scout?
I moved around a lot so the opportunity wasn't there for me to do it.
I did manage to stay in Brownies for a whole month before moving though.

17:When was the last time you wrote a letter to someone on paper?
Sometime in the past few weeks, though it's not counting the letter I'm in the middle of writing that may or may not get sent.

18:Can you change the oil on a car?
No.

19:Ever gotten a speeding ticket?
Yes.

20:Ever ran out of gas?
No.

21:Favorite kind of sandwich?
There was one at college that introduced me to the joy of Gouda. I don't remember what it was called but it had gouda and turkey. Probably brown mustard too.

22:Best thing to eat for breakfast?
Waffles and peanut butter with bananas.

23:What is your usual bedtime?
Late. I've been aiming for 10pm, but don't tend to actually get to bed until midnight.

24:Are you stubborn?
Yes.

25:Who is better...Leno or Letterman?
Colbert

26:Are you afraid of heights?
Yes

27:Do you sing in the car?
If alone...absolutely!

28:Do you dance in the car?
Ye....uh.... sorta.

29:Last time you got a portrait taken by a photographer?
...almost nine years ago?

30:Favorite type of fruit pie?
Lemon meringue

31:Occupations you wanted to be when you were a kid?
An actress, Miss America...and if those didn't work out, a teacher.
Then I grew up and wanted to be a writer, public speaker, or coroner. Or mortician.

32:Ever have a Deja-vu feeling?
Way too often.

33:What do you wear to bed?
Clothes

34:Wal-Mart, Target or Kmart?
Target. In fact, I just came back from Target where I was approached by a random older gentleman who spent the following hour telling me his life story. He said his mother had this emptiness that she said was filled when she met her husband, and her husband (unbeknownst to her) felt the same. And that I reminded him of this nun who use to be his english teacher in high school.

35:Ever take dance lessons?
....are you for real?
Yes. There is even a video or two of me dancing floating around on YouTube.

36:Who would you like to see in concert?
Every time there is an opportunity to see Weird Al appear, I miss out. Weird Al, The Black Keys and I suppose Hank Green and/or Chameleon Circuit.

37:Hot tea or cold tea?
Hot

38:Sugar or snickerdoodles?
Snickerdoodles

39:Ever won a contest?
Yes, and I have a tiara around here someplace that proves it. Also a medal, but that was 2nd place in a dance contest.

40:Do you want to get married?
Honestly, as much as I speak about the religious life (here, on Tumblr and in person).... yes. I harbor the fantasy that one day, I will be loved openly by a man who would actually want to take on this difficult task of making this idea of "family" work in the midst of dysfunction. That there is someone who wouldn't see my inexperience with Catholicism (or my past, my insecurities, my relatives) as a drawback, and most importantly.... after seeing my worst, still would want to be with me. It's a tall order, for sure. And though I've seen guys who may fit the majority of this criteria, I have a hard time opening up to others. Really, I just don't think they could handle my family. (Okay, really, I just don't think they'd want to be with me)

41:Do you have kids?
As I tell my students each year... no. The 250 we have each year at school are enough for me.

42:Do you want kids?
Yes. And though I'm being vague about it, the identity crisis I've gone through over the last month has been related to this. I use to say when I was younger that if I had kids, I'd want to be a foster mother (or adopt) and give a home to a child who really needs it. I wouldn't want to go for the babies necessarily, but the older and "harder to adopt" children. And I realize that it's still an option: nothing is set in stone. It's just that some news (fertility/health related) is difficult to hear, even if you didn't hang your hopes on having children of your own.

  1. #42 Hit me.

I have birthed three children, adopted two, and fostered 10. That news of my infertility sent me into a bit of a tailspin even when my lap is often overflowing with children! I can not imagine what lies within that word "difficult" up there. I am going to take my reaction to your reaction as an invitation to pray.

Teacher, possible foster/adopt parent, convert. We seem to have some common ground here. Following Scribbles and Bits!

  2. Hi Ashley :)

It's always encouraging to find another single Catholic girl in the blogging world. :)

And I hear you about #42 as well. I have polycystic ovarian syndrome, which may or may not affect my fertility some day. I serve a pretty big God, though, so we'll see. ;) And I too am a fan of adoption!

    Peace, sister!
